Whether you are shipping e-commerce products to customers or transferring sensitive equipment between corporate offices, the safety of your goods during courier and freight transport relies heavily on one crucial factor: packaging.
An established logistics network can track your parcel 24/7, but if the item isn’t packed correctly for the rigors of road transport, damages can still occur. Here is how to choose and apply the right packaging.
1. The Outer Shell: Choose the Right Box
Don’t reuse old, weakened supermarket boxes for shipping valuable goods.
- Single-Wall Corrugated Boxes: Suitable for lightweight, non-fragile items under 5kg (e.g., clothing, soft goods).
- Double-Wall Corrugated Boxes: Essential for heavier items or fragile goods (electronics, glassware). They provide superior stacking strength and crush resistance in the back of a delivery van or heavy-duty truck.
2. Internal Cushioning: Stop the Movement
The golden rule of freight packaging is: If you shake the box and feel movement, it’s not packed correctly.
- Bubble Wrap: The industry standard for wrapping individual fragile items.
- Void Fill (Air Pillows or Kraft Paper): Use this to tightly fill any empty space in the box so the item is suspended in the center, at least 5cm away from the outer walls.
- Foam Inserts: Ideal for high-value electronics that require exact-fit protection.
3. Sealing: Use the Right Tape
Standard household sticky tape or masking tape will peel off during transit due to temperature changes or friction.
- Use heavy-duty packing tape (at least 48mm wide).
- Apply the H-Tape Method: Apply tape along the main center seam of the box, and then seal the two parallel edge seams on both the top and bottom of the carton.
4. Palletizing for Large Shipments
If you are shipping heavy goods, multiple boxes, or industrial equipment, palletizing is the safest method.
- Stack boxes squarely on the pallet, ensuring no overhang.
- Place heavier boxes at the bottom.
- Shrink-wrap the entire load tightly to the pallet, wrapping from the base upwards several times to create a single, unified load that won’t shift when a forklift moves it.
